OUR Purpose

Building a more resilient grid for the communities that depend on it

Risk should be deeply understood when so much is at stake. This simple truth lies at the heart of our purpose.

FROM OUR CEO

The future we want to build

The future does not have to be defined by growing risk; it can be defined by a grid strong
enough to power progress, protect communities, and withstand a changing world.

what we value

A more resilient future demands urgency, curiosity, rigor and care

01
Tackling the climate crisis is our greatest mission

We act with urgency.

02
Our curiosity fuels our growth

We recognize that change is constant, and we find joy and power in exploration.

03
We’re rooted in diversity

Just as ecosystems need biodiversity to thrive, our resiliency comes from our differences.

04
We care for each other

We love the power of machines but we nurture each other as humans.

05
Trust is fundamental

We assume the best in everyone, and we share ideas openly so that we have a positive impact.

How we got here

From Amsterdam  to the North American grid

Our story began with a simple belief: a clearer understanding of the natural world could lead to better decisions for the people living in it.

Founded in Lisbon

Indra den Bakker and Anniek Schouten found Overstory to apply machine learning and satellite imagery to the climate crisis. After winning several competitions, they join Techstars in Lisbon to incubate the idea.

2020
First utility customers

Portuguese utility becomes Overstory’s first customer. The company’s focus sharpens from forests broadly to the vegetation risk threatening power reliability and contributing to catastrophic wildfires.

2021
Expanding to the Americas and Europe

With a European base established in Amsterdam, the platform expands across the Americas and Europe, delivering tree-level risk across tens of thousands of network miles.

2023
$14M Series A, led by B Capital

Fresh capital accelerates North American expansion and deepens Overstory’s science, from imagery and detection models to a validation loop with certified arborists.

2024
A year of growth, and a profound loss

The business doubled its customer base and the miles it analyzed, in its most successful year yet. In the fall, Indra den Bakker passes away at 35, after a courageous battle with cancer.

2025
$43M Series B & Wildfire Intelligence

A $43 million round led by Blume Equity funds international growth and advanced risk models. Overstory launches next-generation Wildfire Intelligence, powered by a proprietary fuel-detection model, and serves six of North America’s ten largest utilities. Read more about our Series B →

2026
Making headlines with Risk Intelligence

Overstory earns recognition from TIME100, the Inc. 5000 and The Economist, while expanding its platform to integrate weather, asset and work-order data into a unified view of utility risk.

where we’re going

Risk intelligence that grows with our natural world

We started with vegetation. Now we’re connecting the data, science and systems utilities rely on to answer more questions, anticipate more risk and strengthen grids around the world.

Built for every question

One interconnected intelligence layer, purpose-built for utilities and powered by AI, that guides teams as they act across the network.

Sharper science, better decisions

Deeper fuel, ignition and spread modeling will help utilities anticipate changing conditions, prioritize action and get ahead of risk.

We care for each other.

We love the power of machines but we nurture each other as humans.
